When you move to another Swiss canton you deregister with your old municipality and register with the new one, as a rule within 14 days. For tax, only one day matters: whoever has their residence in the new canton on 31 December is taxed there for the entire year (art. 4b para. 1 StHG), and the same canton levies the direct federal tax. The same move, three weeks earlier or later, can therefore mean a noticeably different tax bill. If you keep a property or a business in the old canton, you remain liable to tax there. Your health insurance premium follows your new municipality. With a residence permit you apply for the change of canton in advance. And if you are a weekly resident, the online route is closed to you.

Key Takeaways
- 01Your residence on 31 December decides which canton taxes your whole annual income, and the same canton levies the direct federal tax. A property or business in the old canton stays taxable there.
- 02You normally have to register within 14 days. Deregistering with the old municipality is part of it, otherwise you have no Heimatschein.
- 03Weekly residents cannot use eUmzugCH and must appear in person.
- 04Your health insurance premium depends on the municipality, not the canton alone. Five cantons have three premium regions, six have two.
- 05With an insurer that operates across Switzerland, the move alone does not allow a switch: the ordinary exits are the end of the year (termination by 30 November) and, only with a 300 franc deductible on the standard model, the end of June. If your insurer does not operate in the new area, the policy ends on the day of the move (art. 7 para. 3 KVG).
- 06If you own a vehicle, report your new address to the road traffic office within 14 days. A new registration document costs 25 to 50 francs depending on the canton.

01
The costliest mistake is the month you move
Most people plan a move around the lease and the start date at work. For tax, that is the second most important question. The most important one is: where are you registered on 31 December?
Switzerland does not split the tax year between cantons when you move. What counts is your residence at the end of the tax period. Whoever lives in the new canton on 31 December is taxed there for the whole year, including the months still spent living and working in the old canton. This is set out in article 4b paragraph 1 of the Tax Harmonisation Act (StHG). The direct federal tax follows the same connecting factor: it is levied by the canton where you have your tax residence at the end of the tax period (article 105 paragraph 1 DBG).
Two qualifications belong with that, otherwise a rule turns into an absolute. First: if something economic still ties you to the old canton, typically a property or a business, you remain liable to tax there, and for the entire tax period (art. 4b para. 2 StHG). Second: a lump sum payment from a pension scheme is taxed in the canton where you lived when it fell due, not where you are registered on 31 December (art. 4b para. 1 StHG and art. 105 para. 4 DBG). If you simply move to another canton with your salary, neither applies to you and the rule above holds without qualification.
In practice:
- You move on 15 December: you are taxed for the full year in the new canton.
- You move on 5 January: the year just ended is still taxed entirely in the old one.
Three weeks apart, and depending on the two cantons a noticeable difference, because tax burdens vary widely between cantons and municipalities.
Run the numbers before you sign the lease. The Federal Tax Administration provides a public tax calculator for exactly this, and you only need your gross income and the two municipalities. If the new canton is cheaper, everything argues for moving before the year ends. If it is more expensive, January can be the clearly better date.
One caution so nobody takes a wrong turn here: this is a thought about timing, not about structuring. Your residence is where your centre of life actually is. Registering somewhere you do not live is not a tax strategy, it is a problem.
02
Deregistering and registering, and why they belong together
A change of canton always involves two steps. You deregister with your old municipality (Gemeinde) and register with the new one. For the registration, a deadline of 14 days after the move applies as a rule. "As a rule" is deliberate: municipalities set this themselves and some differ. Checking your new municipality's website takes two minutes.
The reason deregistering is not optional is called the Heimatschein, a certificate of origin tied to your place of citizenship. Your old municipality hands it to you and you deposit it with the new one. No deregistration means no Heimatschein, and no Heimatschein means no registration. Get the order wrong and you will stand at the counter and have to come back.
If the Heimatschein has been lost, you order a new one from the civil registry office (Zivilstandsamt) of your Heimatgemeinde, your municipality of citizenship, which is not the same as where you live. Allow time for that, it does not happen overnight.
According to ch.ch, you bring these documents to register:
- The Heimatschein, individually or jointly for couples.
- Your family booklet (Familienbüchlein) or family certificate, if you have children.
- If needed, your health insurance card or proof of your current basic insurance policy.
Whatever your municipality asks for beyond that is on its website. To be safe, bring your ID as well.
If you do not hold a Swiss passport: the Heimatschein applies to Swiss nationals. In its place you get a step of your own, and it belongs at the start, not at the end. Anyone holding a short stay or residence permit must apply for the new canton's permit in advance, meaning before you move your place of residence, under article 37 paragraph 1 of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act (AIG). ch.ch names the cantonal migration and labour market authority of your place of residence as the responsible body, which after a change of canton means a new office.
The good news is in the same article. With a residence permit you have a legal entitlement to change canton, as long as you are not unemployed and no grounds for revocation under article 62 paragraph 1 apply. With a settlement permit the entitlement applies if no grounds for revocation under article 63 exist. So it is not a matter of goodwill, it is a procedure with an outcome you can plan around.
The advance-permit duty under paragraph 1 applies only to short stay and residence permits. If you already hold a settlement permit (permit C), you simply register with the new municipality like everyone else, without asking the canton first.
And one paragraph almost nobody knows, although it applies to exactly our readers: no permit at all is required for a temporary stay in another canton (art. 37 para. 4 AIG). If you work and sleep in the new canton during the week but keep your centre of life where it is, you are not moving your place of residence. Which documents your new municipality actually wants to see at the counter is best asked there directly, municipalities handle this differently.
How registering in Switzerland works in general is laid out step by step in our registration checklist. A change of canton follows the same mechanics, you simply walk the path in both directions.
- Permit holders onlyApply for the change of canton in advanceWith a short stay or residence permit, apply to the new canton's migration authority before you move (art. 37 para. 1 AIG).
- Old municipalityDeregisterThis is when the Heimatschein is handed to you. Swiss nationals need it for the next step.
- The connecting pieceHeimatscheinLost it? A replacement comes from the civil registry of your municipality of citizenship, not where you live. That takes time.
- New municipalityRegister, as a rule within 14 daysAs a weekly resident, in person at the counter. According to ch.ch, eUmzugCH is not open to you.

03
Move online, unless you are a weekly resident
There is a federal service for reporting a change of address called eUmzugCH. Many municipalities are connected, and if yours is, you handle deregistration and registration on screen.
But there is one exclusion, and it hits exactly the group that changes canton most often. ch.ch states it plainly: people with Wochenaufenthalt, weekly residence, cannot use this service.
So if you live at your work location during the week and return to your main residence at weekends, your route leads to the counter. That is not a flaw in the system. It follows from the fact that weekly residence involves two municipalities at the same time and has to be confirmed each year.
Plan for an appointment when the municipal office is actually open. Many smaller municipalities have counter hours on two afternoons a week, and that is exactly where the 14 day deadline tends to fail. What else works differently with weekly residence is covered in our guide to Wochenaufenthalt.
04
Your health insurance moves with you, the premium might change
Your basic insurance continues, you do not need to take out a new policy when you move. What may change is the price.
Premiums are not only staggered by canton. Within larger cantons they are staggered by premium region:
| Premium regions | Cantons | |
|---|---|---|
| three | Bern, Graubünden, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Zurich | |
| two | Basel-Landschaft, Fribourg, Schaffhausen, Ticino, Vaud, Valais |
What matters is therefore which municipality you live in and which region it belongs to. Two municipalities in the same canton, twenty kilometres apart, can carry different premiums. Report your new address to your insurer promptly so they bill the right tariff from the right date.
Important for your expectations: on its own, the move creates no extraordinary right of termination, as long as your insurer also operates in the new canton. Two ordinary exits are open to you, and the second one is often overlooked:
- At the end of the year, for everyone. The termination of your basic insurance must reach your current insurer by 30 November.
- At the end of June, but only with a 300 franc deductible and the standard insurance model. The notice period is three months, so the letter has to be there by the end of March.
If you move into a more expensive premium region in spring and hold the 300 franc deductible on the standard model, you do not necessarily have to sit out the whole year. Check first which model and which deductible you actually have.
And then there is the case almost nobody thinks of: if you are with an insurer that only operates regionally and you move into an area where it does not, you have to switch. Your policy then ends at the moment of the move under article 7 paragraph 3 of the Health Insurance Act, regardless of the deadlines above. With the large insurers that operate across Switzerland this does not arise. When in doubt, ask your insurer whether it writes policies at your new address.
If you have recently arrived in Switzerland and the basics are still open, our guide to health insurance after moving here covers the ground.

Car, post and the small things that get expensive later
Vehicle. If you own a car or motorcycle, inform the road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt) of your new canton. The notification has a deadline of its own: within 14 days of having a new address. Your vehicle registration document is then changed or replaced, and a new one costs 25 to 50 francs depending on the canton. What needs to happen with your licence plates is best clarified directly with the road traffic office of your new canton.
Post. A forwarding order with Swiss Post redirects your mail to the new address for a set period. It is not mandatory, but it stops an invoice or an official letter from landing with the people who took over your old flat.
Radio and TV levy. The levy is tied to the household, not the person. When you move, who owes it can therefore change, especially if you move into or out of a shared flat. How that fits together is covered in our guide to the Serafe levy in shared flats and weekly residence.
Your old flat. Notice period, handover and deposit run in parallel with the change of canton and have their own deadlines. See cancelling a Swiss lease and deposit and handover without disputes.

Timeline: what happens when
| When | What | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months before | Compare the tax burden of both municipalities and set the moving date accordingly | The 31 December cut-off is the single biggest lever | |
| 3 months before | Give notice on your old flat, check the deadlines | A missed deadline costs a full rental period | |
| By end of March | Only if you want to switch insurer at the end of June and hold the 300 franc deductible on the standard model | Three month notice period | |
| 4 weeks before | Secure a room or flat in the new canton | No address, no registration | |
| 2 weeks before | Look up counter hours of the new municipality and plan a slot | Especially as a weekly resident, since online is not available | |
| Moving week | Deregister with the old municipality, take the Heimatschein | Without it there is no registration | |
| Within 14 days | Register with the new municipality | This deadline applies as a rule | |
| Within 14 days | Report the new address to the road traffic office | A separate deadline, independent of the municipality | |
| Same week | Inform your health insurer and employer | The premium region depends on the new municipality |
07
The special case: you only live in the new canton during the week
Not every change of canton is a full move. Many people change workplace, keep their centre of life where it is, and take a room at the new location during the week. That makes you a Wochenaufenthalter, a weekly resident, and different rules apply.
Your main residence stays where your centre of life is, and that is normally where you remain liable for tax. At your work location you register as a weekly resident. The online route via eUmzugCH is not open to you for this.
For that situation you do not need a furnished home for the ages. You need a room that is livable from day one and whose cost you actually know up front. That is what BoVita is for: furnished, with kitchen, bathroom and Wi-Fi, at a price that already includes the running costs, so the tax bill in the new canton does not end up being the only surprise of your year.
